What is Handball?

Handball is a fast-paced team sport where two teams of seven players (six court players and a goalkeeper) pass a ball using their hands to try and score by throwing the ball into the opposing team's goal. It's played on a rectangular court, and the game involves strategic passing, dribbling, and shooting techniques.

Initially played outdoors on grass, Handball evolved into an indoor sport in the early 20th century, gaining popularity across Europe.

The sport's rapid growth led to the formation of the International Handball Federation (IHF) in 1946, further solidifying its global presence.

Handball combines elements of basketball, soccer, and water polo, demanding agility, speed, and teamwork from its players. Handball's electrifying pace and strategic intricacies continue to captivate audiences worldwide, cementing its status as one of the most thrilling team sports in existence.

How to Play Handball - The Basics

Objectives of the Game:

Handball is a fast-paced team sport where the primary objective is to score more goals than the opposing team by throwing the ball into their net. Each match consists of two halves, and the team with the most goals at the end wins.

Court and Equipment:

Handball is played on an indoor court measuring 40 metres by 20 metres. The court features a goal at each end and a six-metre semicircular line, called the goal area. Essential materials include a handball, which is smaller and lighter than a football, and goals with nets.

Players:

A handball team consists of seven players on the court at a time—six outfield players and one goalkeeper. Teams usually have several substitutes to rotate players throughout the game.
